Concrete Jungle
Roaming wild in a concrete jungle
Red valentinos ruthlessly stepping on the innocent pavement
Flaunting a wealth rich and fragrant
Clicking clopping with no time to fumble
Programmed for strict schedules and see powerful strangers mumble
Ping! Ding! Ding! The language spoken by their portable pocket friend
Constantly dancing thumbs moving across the lit screen
For a genre blending salsa and tango to something never seen
So focused on experiencing reality at the digital end
Missing the chance to meet a new character or friend
Is this the legacy we carry on to the future generations
Earning enough to spend stacks on Gucci and Chanel
Walking from one period to the next with the help of a mental bell
But not enough to give to the man sleeping near the bus station
The privilege becomes a norm and part of the lifestyle in a nation
What if one to lead a life in reality
Funny to say but the gadgets talk the truth
Look around to the socially concerned youth
It's much more fun to actually get to know what's in front of me
Then just give a short glance and forget about hearing the ragged man's history
The use of sound devices has developed my ideas on the unsocial behaviour of people and unappreciated privileges because the word choices made enhance the sounds of the city environment. Onomatopoeia, assonance, alliteration, rhyme and consonance altogether help support my argument against continuing a disconnection with reality. Firstly, I chose to include onomatopoeia as it is a tool to describe the noises from the flashy accessories and gadgets in a very literate way. This emphasises on the distinct sounds which can only be heard in a busy city and the flaunting wealth that doesn't cause attention to those owning similar items. It also questions why we don't get bored of seeing the same scene and doing more spontaneous actions. Further more, assonance, alliteration and consonance has been additionally used to add a rhythm whilst reading the poem. Lines with words of similar sounds create a flow to what is being said and the more use of it can express chaos or areas of strong emotion. A rhyme scheme has also been included for each stanza (ABBAC) to not only give an entertaining effect but links lines to the previous or next one. All in all, these devices narrates my ideas and evokes personal reactions by being familiar with certain sounds.
