NARRATIVE TECHNIQUES
Point of view - Protagonist (Christopher) in 1st Person
Narration - The narrator is speaking to himself
Speech - The speech spoken very informal and in a conversational manner
Tense - Present continous tense
How do these factors impact on your relationship with the protagonist?
In the novel, various narrative techniques allow me to grasp a good relationship with the protagonist, having an intimate look into his thoughts and feelings in a first person narration. With this, the author has chosen to narrate in the protagonist's (Christopher's) point of view, allowing me to grasp emotions such as frustration and courage to be felt. The language used in the text is very informal, reflecting characteristics of his thought processes and honestly revealing his opinions. Furthermore, these techniques helps me embody the protagonist himself. I have the ability to simultaneously face his emotional distresses and read through as if what's in his conscience, instead of viewing the events and behaviour he displays in the perspective of an outsider.
How do these factors impact on the way in which you experience the action in the novel?
These factors impact the way in which I experience action in the novel through becoming the center of action in a first person narration. The protagonist speaks about his opinions when conflicts arise by himself and reveals his personality traits. Speech also highlights his interaction with other character's such as his father and mother whilst knowing these inner thoughts, leading me to make predictions of what events make occur next. Thus, I can understand better of why or what steps he gradually takes towards overcoming his fears and the decision-making that happens to resolve the issues in is involved in, causing the rise/fall in action and climax.
How do the above factors combine to allow the author to achieve their purpose in your novel?
The author's purpose for the novel was to focus on not underestimating the abilities of those disabled (more specifically autistic) and people whom are given certain 'titles' by society. Through first person narration and perspectives of the protagonist being focused on, the reader is able to understand how the character thinks, reacts and observes their environment. Christopher's usual mindset is clearly evident by his method of explaining his personal stories, often mentioning irrelevant topics and unable to experience affection. Though this, a reader can identify the unusual structure of the narration that is his mental state, possibly similar to those having autism like him. Aside being able to become the character himself, the present continuous tense of the text directly follows how his actions change, ultimately taking notice of how the character develops himself and becomes more independent. Thus, there is a questioning of such discrimination towards people like Christopher by the audience and utilises such elements to do so.
