CULTURAL FACTORS
Write down a list of the main cultural factors that you think influence the type of English you speak at school. Try to think of as many as possible. Now choose the 2 most important factors. Why did you choose these 2? How do they impact on the way you use English?
1)Cultural Factors Influencing the English I speak:-
Nationalities of my parents
Education and schools environment I've been in
Types of entertainment I watch
Exposure to other cultures and traditions
Music I listen to
Origin of my parents
My mother tongue
Family background/values
2 and 3)The two most important factors which has made an impact on the English I currently speak would be my family and the school environments I have been exposed too. Both factors have gradually allowed me to develop and alter the way in which I communicate in english. Firstly, my family is one of the chosen factors because they are people whom have surrounded me at home and outside and provide the most interaction with me. Although I may have lived overseas for most my life, my parents and siblings have allowed me to be able to recognise and speak the slangs of my mother tongue. Aside this, the international school environment I have been put in all my life has adjusted my accents and caused to become more aware of westernised trends and approach to situations.
4)The English I speak my refer to a variation of topics and is effected by factors such as my family and education/school environment in order to create the persona of when speaking such a language. My family's background has served as a great influence as it can change my attitudes towards others and the concepts I value. For example, the names or ways in which I refer and talk to my siblings and parents may be different from one another, such as calling my their names or speaking in third person towards elders. This can also create a sense of respect to those in and outside of my family circle. Further more, the teachers and facilities in my school environments may change my thought processes, trends or entertainment I follow and the style in the tone and character of my English. To show this, the teaching standards can differ but each can allow me to gain knowledge on my writing style and proper structures of English.
