DRAMATISATION
Our group is going to explore themes and main ideas in 'An Inspector Calls', reflecting these through our interpretation of the play. With this, a message significantly being conveyed in the storyline is taking responsibility for our own actions. This is evident as each member of the Birling family and Gerald learn unexpected qualities of one another, such as the ruthless attitudes of Mrs. Birling on helpless women or Gerald's dishonesty risking his engagement. Thus, the emotions expressed intensifies to further develop the tensions. We decided to attach heavy objects or stones on the backs of each character after being interrogated, symbolising the burden and guilt as result to their shameful doings. Furthermore, their sophisticated image and proud behaviours is emphasised through wearing most/all-white clothing. It shows a 'clean canvas', resembling their stiff response to being accused of driving a suicide. Aside this, contrasting black coats/jackets or chains could be worn after the inspector attempts to test their mindsets, as if a psychological game is played. Therefore, the inspector dictates their thoughts and transforms the controlling powers. All in all, these concepts are explained through unusual visual elements to dramatise the performance.
