In person he was cadaverous and blackavized, and his hair was dressed in long curls, which at a little distance looked like black candles, and gave a singularly threatening expression to his handsome countenance. His eyes were of the blue of the forget-me-not, and of a profound melancholy, save when he was plunging his hook into you, at which time two red spots appeared in them and lit them up horribly. In manner, something of the grand seigneur still clung to him, so that he even ripped you up with an air, and I have been told that he was a RACONTEUR [storyteller] of repute. He was never more sinister than when he was most polite, which is probably the truest test of breeding; and the elegance of his diction, even when he was swearing, no less than the distinction of his demeanour, showed him one of a different cast from his crew. A man of indomitable courage, it was said that the only thing he shied at was the sight of his own blood, which was thick and of an unusual colour.
The author's aim is to be fearful of Captain Hook's character, emphasising on his sinister qualities that build on his unfavourable reputation in the community. There is a dominant impression of feeling scared, intimated and more cautious, using specific terms in order to deliver such an atmosphere. For example, the passage states that he "was cadaverous and blackvized (1)". Although he was a living being, Hook presented an almost haunting aura, thus appearing dark faced and dead looking. Such features are often connected to supernatural events or ghosts, carrying an unwanted presence as they seen as bedevilling. Similarly, the pirate could have experienced a number of brutal fights and has aged in savagery. Furthermore, "His eyes were of the blue of the forget-me-not (2) ". This further continuous his demeanour as an usual or possibly beastly sight, comparing the colour of his eyes to blue forget-me-nots. His highly pigmented eyes relates to an unforgettable stare and contrasts with the dark shadow-like expressions of his hair and skin, forming an abnormal combination of characteristics. His behaviour was more sinister than polite and the narrator hears that "he was a RACONTEUR of repute (5)".Aside physical attributes, there is a direct implication of his violence in his acts in the use of language such as 'sinister' against 'polite' but also through being known as a reputable storyteller. Therefore, much like a storyteller who generically reads books and such, Hook told a series of stories on his adventures and the fatalities with either the greatest detail or told a horrible variation of his murderous ways.
